Most solar companies will not service someone else’s system

If you have called around already, you have probably discovered this. Installers are set up to sell and install new systems. A service call on an eight-year-old array with an unfamiliar inverter and no documentation is slow, awkward work that does not fit that model, so most companies decline it — or quote a price designed to make you go away.

That gap is why this page exists. Diagnosing and repairing existing systems is work we take deliberately, not reluctantly.

What we actually repair

Systems producing nothing at all

A completely dead system usually comes down to a handful of causes: a tripped AC or DC disconnect, a failed inverter, a rapid shutdown device that has latched off, a blown fuse or breaker at the combiner, or a utility-side issue. These are diagnosable in a single visit with the right meters.

Systems producing less than they should

Harder, and more common than outright failure. Partial underproduction points to a failed microinverter or optimizer on one or more panels, a string that has dropped offline, new shading that did not exist at installation, soiling, or genuine module degradation. The distinction matters because the fixes and the costs are completely different, which is why measurement comes before any quote.

Inverters and module-level electronics

String inverters are the most commonly replaced component in any solar system — most carry warranties in the 10 to 12 year range, so a system installed in the mid-2010s is now in the window. Microinverters and DC optimisers usually carry longer warranties but sit under the panels, so replacing one means partially dismantling the array. Both are routine work; the difference is access and labour, and an honest quote separates the two.

Monitoring that has gone dark

A monitoring gateway that has lost its connection is not the same problem as a system that has stopped producing — but from your phone they look identical. Sorting out which one you have is usually the first diagnostic step, and it is frequently a router change, a replaced modem or an expired portal account rather than anything on the roof.

Physical and weather damage

Storm-damaged racking, panels cracked by falling branches, loosened flashing, corroded fasteners on coastal blocks in Bay Ridge, the Rockaways or southern Staten Island, and wildlife nesting under arrays. Roof-adjacent work of this kind is where holding both the electrical and the contractor licenses stops being a talking point and starts mattering.

Roof leaks around a solar array

The single worst situation to be in with two contractors: the roofer says the leak is at a solar penetration, the solar company says the roof was already failing. Nobody moves and the water keeps coming in. We can lift the array, find the actual source, repair it and put the array back — one company, one warranty conversation.

Why the licensing matters here

Solar service work sits across three trades. The diagnosis and any component swap is electrical work. Lifting an array and working on the roof deck below is contractor work. Residential work in New York City requires Home Improvement Contractor licensing.

We hold all three in house. In practice that means:

  • One company is responsible. No standing between a roofer and a solar company while they blame each other for a leak.
  • Electrical work is done by licensed electricians, not by a roofing crew unbolting panels and hoping.
  • Roof work is done properly and flashed correctly, rather than by a solar crew treating the membrane as somebody else’s problem.

This is genuinely the most common failure mode we see on other people’s service work, and it is not a small thing. An array reinstalled over a badly patched penetration will leak, and it will leak somewhere you cannot see until the ceiling stains.

The utility side, which gets missed

Which utility you are on changes what a repair involves, and this is where out-of-area contractors get it wrong.

New York City and most of Westchester are Con Edison. Nassau and Suffolk are PSEG Long Island. Parts of Westchester sit in NYSEG territory. These are different interconnection processes with different paperwork.

For most repairs — a like-for-like inverter swap, a replaced optimiser, re-flashing a penetration — nothing changes with the utility, because the system’s rated AC output has not changed. Where it does matter is when a repair alters the system: a replacement inverter with a different output rating, added capacity, or added battery storage. Then the interconnection record needs updating, and doing that after the fact is considerably more painful than doing it in sequence. Any contractor who cannot tell you which category your job falls into has not thought about it.

How a service call actually runs

  1. Phone triage. What the monitoring shows, what the inverter display or status lights say, what changed recently. A useful proportion of calls get narrowed down before anyone drives anywhere.
  2. On-site diagnosis. Electrical testing at the inverter, combiner and string level; a physical inspection of the array, racking and penetrations; monitoring data reviewed against expected output for the season.
  3. A written finding. What failed, what it will take to fix, what is under warranty and what is not, and what happens if you do nothing.
  4. The repair. Parts ordered, warranty claims filed with the manufacturer where coverage exists, work scheduled.
  5. Verification. Production confirmed against expectation before we leave, and monitoring confirmed to be reporting again.

On pricing: we are not going to print a number on this page, because a diagnostic visit and a full inverter replacement with roof work are not the same job and pretending otherwise helps nobody. What we will do is tell you the cost before work starts, and tell you when a repair is not worth doing on a system near the end of its life.

When we will tell you not to repair it

Sometimes the right advice is to stop spending. A system with a failed inverter, a roof with three years left and modules already fifteen years old is not a repair job — it is a decision about replacement, and it deserves to be framed that way rather than fixed piecemeal at your expense.
