Solar Panel Installation in Todt Hill, Staten Island
Todt Hill has the best solar roofs in New York City and the worst shade problem. Those two facts are the whole story here. The houses are detached and large, sitting on lots that dwarf anything in Brooklyn or Queens, which means roof area is not the constraint for once. What is the constraint is the mature tree canopy that makes the neighborhood desirable in the first place. We have completed ten permitted rooftop solar installations on and around Todt Hill, and on nearly every one the design question was shade, not space.

Shade is the whole engineering problem on this ridge
Todt Hill rises to about 400 feet – the highest natural ground in New York City, and the highest point on the Atlantic coastal plain between Florida and Cape Cod. The serpentine ridge that produces that elevation also produces the neighborhood’s character: steep grades, winding roads, and oaks and maples that are frequently taller than the houses they shelter.
That matters more than most homeowners expect, because shade does not reduce a solar array’s output proportionally. On a conventional string inverter, one shaded panel drags down every panel wired in series with it. A roof that is 15% shaded can lose far more than 15% of its production if the system is designed as though the shade were not there.
How we handle it on a wooded lot:
- We model the canopy, not just the roof. Shade analysis accounts for tree height and position across the seasons, including where the sun sits in December when your production matters least but your bill is highest.
- Module-level electronics. Microinverters or DC optimisers so each panel produces independently. On a clear roof this is a marginal upgrade; on Todt Hill it is usually the difference between a system worth installing and one that is not.
- We will tell you which trees are the problem – and we will not pretend a roof works when it does not. If the honest answer is that your lot needs selective pruning first, or that the south-facing slope is unusable, you will hear it at the site visit rather than after installation.
Big roofs mean the lease arithmetic changes
Detached Todt Hill homes commonly support systems in the 10 to 16 kW range – roughly double what fits on a Brooklyn row house once fire-code access paths are subtracted. That changes which financing option wins.
The 30% federal residential credit ended for systems placed in service after December 31, 2025, so buying outright earns no federal credit. Section 48E still exists on the business side, which means a $0-down or prepaid lease lets the financing company claim that credit and pass the value through as a lower payment. The larger the system, the more federal value there is to pass through – so on a big Todt Hill roof the lease usually produces a better number than a cash purchase, by a wider margin than it would on a small roof.
What you can claim on Staten Island
- NYC property tax abatement – 30% of eligible system cost, applied at 7.5% per year over four years against your property tax bill. Staten Island homes are tax class 1 and eligible
- NYS solar equipment credit – 25% of installed cost, capped at $5,000
- NYSERDA NY-Sun – a per-watt incentive paid through us, already reflected in your price
- Con Edison net metering – Con Edison serves Staten Island, and you earn credit for exported power
One Todt Hill advantage worth naming: there is no Landmarks review here. None of Staten Island’s three historic districts covers Todt Hill, so unlike a brownstone in Park Slope or Bed-Stuy there is no Landmarks Preservation Commission application, no visibility test, and no design constraint on where the panels go. Permitting is the standard DOB and Con Edison path.
Pitched roofs, wind, and doing the attachment properly
Most Todt Hill homes have pitched roofs with asphalt shingle or tile, which means penetrating mounts rather than the ballasted systems we use on Brooklyn flat roofs. Penetrations are entirely routine when they are flashed correctly – the failures we get called to repair are almost always sealant-only installations that relied on caulk instead of proper flashing.
Exposure matters here too. A house on an open ridge at 400 feet sees higher sustained wind than a sheltered inland street, so attachment spacing is engineered for the actual wind load rather than the code minimum. That is not an upsell; it is what keeps an array on a roof for twenty-five years.
Roofing and solar from one contractor
Roofing is part of what we take on – we contract the roof work through our roofing partner and manage it alongside the solar. On a pitched roof with under ten years of shingle life left, we will tell you to replace the roof first even though it delays the solar job – putting a 25-year array on a 6-year roof means paying to remove and reinstall it. If your roof needs work later, we remove and reinstall the system ourselves, so there is no dispute between two trades about who caused a leak.
Equipment is tier-one: Qcells, Enphase, Trina Solar, Maxeon, SEG Solar and Axitec, backed by a 30-year warranty through Solar Insure covering panels, inverters, racking and labor, with real-time monitoring.

Todt Hill solar questions
My lot is heavily wooded. Is solar worth it at all?
Sometimes yes, sometimes no, and we will give you the real answer. With module-level electronics a partially shaded roof can still perform well. With heavy all-day shade on the only usable slope, it cannot, and we will say so rather than sell you a system that underproduces.
How big a system fits?
Typically 10 to 16 kW on a detached Todt Hill house – among the largest residential systems we build anywhere in the city.
Is there Landmarks review on Todt Hill?
No. No historic district covers the area, so it is the standard DOB and Con Edison process.
Will panels survive the wind up here?
Yes, when the attachment is engineered for the exposure. We specify mount spacing for the actual wind load on an elevated, open site rather than defaulting to a minimum.
Get a free Todt Hill solar assessment
We will walk your roof, model the tree canopy across the seasons, review twelve months of Con Edison usage and your property tax bill, then tell you what the roof would realistically produce and what it would cost – including whether a prepaid lease beats buying outright on a system this size. If shade or roof condition makes it a poor candidate, we will tell you that instead.

Tree shading is the recurring constraint across Staten Island’s wooded interior. Where lots are more open, roof area rather than shade sets the system size – as on the detached houses in Flatlands and Bergen Beach.
Nearby on the North Shore, many Westerleigh homes are a century old, so there the first question is the roof framing, not the shade.
